Why You'll Love Making Melona Mochi
It's a great introduction to mochi. With only two ingredients, it can't get any easier right? Melona Bars are already a great frozen treat to have in stock for the family. And if you have a waffle maker, I highly recommend making them into chewy waffles. The kids will love it and there's barely any cleanup. If you're looking for one that requires absolutely no kneading whatsoever, check out my Butter Mochi - just mix and bake!
Only 2 Ingredients
- MELONA Frozen Dessert Bars: Use Honeydew or any other flavor. You can find these bars in many Asian markets, and now I'm also seeing them even at major grocery stores!
- Glutinous Rice Flour: You may see it labeled Sweet Rice Flour or Mochiko flour. Please do not to be mistaken it with regular Rice Flour. Glutinous flour is what gives mochi its chewy texture.
How To Make Melona Mochi

Allow your Melona ice cream bars to melt at room temperature in a glass or bowl, or heat in short increments in the microwave.

Combine the melted Melona liquid with glutinous flour and mix well.

Steam easily by covering bowl with plastic wrap, poke holes using a fork, and microwave for 2 minutes. Stir and microwave for 2 more minutes.

Add a small amount of oil to a cutting board or counter work surface. Knead the mochi dough until it is bouncy and smooth. Divide and roll into equal balls. Griddle in waffle iron, if desired.
Suzy's Tips For Success
- Mochi will be very hot: Be cautious when removing the cling wrap. Use a rubber spatula if needed and stir to cool down mochi before kneading by hand.
- Apply oil to grease your work surface: You can knead directly in the bowl, or brush on a small amount of oil onto your cutting board or work surface so it does not stick. You can also opt to use gloves. Be sure to also grease your waffle iron as well.
Best Way To Store Melona Mochi
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. If not consumed, wrap with plastic wrap and store in the freezer. Thaw at room temperature for 1 hour until mochi texture is soft.
FAQ
No. Make sure your flour label reads glutinous rice flour, sweet rice flour, or mochiko flour. This is the ingredient that gives it its chewy texture.
Yes! Any sweetened ice cream bar should work. I've seen people use banana milk! You can use the measurements on this recipe, but you can also weigh the melted bars and simply following the ratio 3:2. 3 parts liquid - 2 parts flour. For example, your melted bars weigh 75 ml = you will need 50g of flour. If it weighs 3oz = you will need 2oz of flour.
